This stunning 1953 contemporary home, known as the Robertson House, was designed by architect Douglas Honnold, a one-time partner of John Lautner and also Richard Neutra. The clear and striking design of this mid-century house characterizes Honnold’s architecture found throughout Los Angeles.
Located on one of San Marino’s premier streets in the Huntington Gardens and Library district this house offers style and elegance blended with comfortable living. The four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and the additional rooms provide ample opportunity for family gatherings as well as offering everyone a private retreat. With a master suite and two additional bedrooms on the main level and a fourth bedroom a part of a separate suite downstairs, the possibilities are endless.
Found throughout the house in remarkable detail, characteristic of Honnold’s work in this time period, are custom crafted walnut built-ins. The dining room features an entire wall of walnut-paneled custom cabinets with storage designed specifically for the accoutrements of a dining room. The bedrooms and halls also showcase walnut built-ins. These bookcases, shelves, desks, and chests of drawers provide an exceptional amount of storage while enhancing the use of each space.
Honnold’s exemplary design continues with the extraordinary combination of indoor/outdoor spaces. The use of glass and windows throughout the house succeed in making one feel a part of the park-like grounds, even while indoors. The flow of the house incorporates the over one half an acre of land, enhancing the peaceful and serene setting. Enjoy the canopy of trees from the breakfast nook in the kitchen, the panoramic views from the living room; and the high windows in the master bedroom providing tree-top views. Step off the terrace and walk the grounds, through the paths that pass by a variety of fully-grown, magnificent trees and flowering plants, as well as grassy lawns. The house was truly designed to be a part of the nature around it.
The preservation of the landscaping and the architectural integrity of the house create a stylized atmosphere of warmth and elegance. This is truly a masterpiece of design and contributes greatly to the architectural and historical context of the area.
